Megan's Reflection :: Sacred Beginnings Retreat, San Diego 2015

I first met Danielle - creator of Sacred Beginnings- in an Itsy Bitsy yoga class she was leading back in 2010. The yoga was fun- my daughter and I both enjoyed it and learned a handful of useful tricks- but what I remember more than anything from those days was getting to be with other moms, and their babies, all different yet the same - and for an hour or more each week we would just sit and talk. About motherhood. About relationships. About life. I looked forward to class every week. 4+ years later and the majority of us moms are still in contact.

I didn't really know what to expect going into the Sacred Beginnings retreat - but I was not going to turn down the opportunity to photograph a retreat in California - so off I went.

As I've mentioned before - it takes me a while to unwind and remember how to relax; especially in new environments, where I tend to get sensory overload and turn into an even more yappy sarcastic version of regular myself. But as the retreat progressed I was able to find my little sliver of calm.

The moms there were all in different stages of life - and had come to the retreat for various reasons. But one thing that stood out to me above all else was the longing for, and consequently the building of, a community.  I witnessed these women excited to go home and expand on that community in their home towns.

As a society we are so hyper-focused on independence and individuality that we have - intentionally or not - abandoned the ideas of community and solidarity. So seeing this community form, and seeds planted for it to continue to grow, truly makes my heart happy.

Danielle has always had a gift for bringing people together and fostering communities. I couldn't think of a more perfect roll for her than to pass on her light to other women and have them share in her gifts of oneness. I am forever thankful for her passion and dedication to bringing moms together and am SO excited to see what the future holds for Sacred Beginnings - and for the unity it will bring to mothers across the world.

Stay wild, child

Tippi

There is a story of a child, in Africa, fearless of all animals, protected by the wild beasts, accepted by the more traditional tribes, knowledgeable of the language of the birds and the secrets of the roots.
A child for whom the desert dunes where a playground and the elephant's back her seesaw.

They say she could speak to the snakes and was friends with the crocodiles.
She says she could silently speak to each one of the animals, and she called them brothers:
"I speak to them with my mind, or through my eyes, my heart or my soul, and I see that they understand and answer me."

The wild leopards did not harm her, the pure elephants did not hide away from her, the raw tribal rituals did not exclude her. She was part of it, just a part of it. So beautifully simple. Nothing more to add.

You can see her in the amazing photos her parents took, and you cannot tell her blonde hair from the lion's, her suntanned skin from the golden sand...
She was the daughter of a French couple (of wildlife photographers), and was born in Namibia where she lived till she was ten.

She was "just a child" with a story, brave, genius, exceptional.
Like yours.
Or should I say she was "just a child", raw, wild, pure... like yours?

How many of us see our children talking to the pets, naturally attracting horses, wishing to hug ducks, playing with birds, admiring the bees, or smiling to the ants? I say do not dismiss this sensibility, this care and treasuring of life's sacredness. Honor it, listen to it's music, dance to it's songs (join humming, if you still remember these magical childhood worlds and it's sacred sounds). Trust your child's nature.

I like her. I like "Tippi of Africa", cause she doesn't let me forget this.

How about you? What reminders does this bring to you?

Retreat Reflection from Elisha

Check out this beautiful reflection from the San Diego Sacred Beginnings retreat!

While getting ready for the Sacred Beginnings retreat I wasn't sure what to expect. I had never gone so far out of my comfort zone before.. Especially since I had my daughter. I was so excited but also really nervous. Upon meeting the other women I would be spending the weekend with I felt IMMEDIATELY at ease... Like I had met my "people". As the weekend went on I learned so much about myself and others. This was a transformative and renewing experience. I dont think I will ever find the words to express my gratitude to Danielle for starting this program. The work you do at this retreat is absolutely vital, and bringing it back to the community and creating a TRIBE is necessary. This is the village you're looking for.. The village of mamas who may not always agree with you but always respect you. The tribe of mamas that feels like family, like home. Do yourself, your family and your community a favor and get in there sisters!
