Naming traditions: China

Nín hǎo everyone! Inspired by more Naming traditions.

Today... China!

The Chinese wouldn’t dream of naming a baby before she’s born.

For life in the womb babies are given false names, or milk names, to scare away evil spirits. Wow this is interesting! So it is believed that if Parents refer to their baby with an animal name or as "ugly" this will trick the spirits into thinking the baby is not worthy of a kidnapping...

The Chinese sometimes have four or five names for a person — one for childhood, one for school, one for after graduation, and even one after death.

Ancestors and family names are very important here and when the Chinese meet someone for the first time, they usually ask: "May I have your family name?"

To announce the baby’s birth, the father sends money and wine to his in-laws. Special ribbons fastened to the wine jar signify if the baby is a boy or a girl. Parents send red eggs to close family and friends — an even number for a girl, odd for a boy.

The child is only named when older.

What about you? How did you name your child?
