Halloween Traditions

Most parents will be celebrating Halloween with their babies and children this week. Where did this North American tradition come from?
Halloween is traditionally observed October 31st and a favorite holiday among children. Halloween is a fun day that encourages babies, children and parents to dress up in costumes, tell scary stories, and go door to door collecting candy. Halloween is a conglomerate of holidays from all over the world from different world traditions, legends and beliefs.
Interestingly, these traditions, beliefs and legends are derived from the ancient Celtic harvest festival called Samhain (pronounced sow-in and also celebrated October 31), which anticipates the coming winter and the rise in deaths that came with the cold (not so fun). Catholic festivals that commemorate martyrs and souls of the dead, such as All Saints' Day (November 1) and All Souls' Day (November 2), also contribute to Halloween's associations with celebrating ghosts and spirits.
