The Dark

When you were a child, did you fear the dark?
I remember I did! In my imaginary world the trees would caress my bedroom wall on windy days; the animals would come and talk to me by my window on the full moons: the cats, before they gave birth; the dogs, calling me for a walk; the birds... Telling stories. But at night... At night I was afraid of the monsters underneath the bed... The crunchy noises from the attic, and the darkness around me.
Experts say the fear of the dark is more common in kids around the ages of 2 or 3, when they’re old enough to imagine, but not wise enough to tell fantasy from reality. I don't remember being aware of this... Difference (and can even argue right now there is no such thing! tongue emoticon ).
Do your children fear the dark?
Before you dismiss this fear and struggle or have a hard time managing it, consider this: the bigger the creativity, the deeper the imaginary world, the more delicate the sensibility, and, depending in what we all fill our world with... The bigger can be the fear...
On a spiritual perspective dark stands for the plane of creation itself... The unknown.
So gently inquiry... What is it that is frightening?
Is fear of the dark fear to be alone? To loose control? To be surprised? To trust? Fear of our own thoughts (our fantasy world)?
Next 5th of March is the first full moon of the New Year of the Goat, in China we celebrate the Lantern Festival. "Community's ability to move about at night with human-made light, namely, lanterns."
During the Lantern Festival, children go out at night to temples carrying paper lanterns, is is so beautiful and to me... Inspiring...
Lanterns are released into the sky symbolizing the people letting go. And as I see everyone buying the animal shaped lanterns and decorating the streets I was thinking... What about ‪#‎createnewfamilytraditions‬ and make a paper lantern with your children...? Make a lantern (or buy one, or use a torch "made special" for this ritual) and help them to go outside, carrying their safe, pure light, protective of all fears... Help to create a mantra... "I am safe", "I am light"... "I am protected".
Happy ‪#‎sacredrituals‬ everyone.
